The following are magazine covers which I have analysed.
The following Fangoria magazine cover has a gory main image which is the well known Freddy Kruger from Nightmare On Elm Street this is an iconic image of a very well known character who horror fans will immediately recognise. The Fangoria title is also iconic because this magazine is for the hardcore fans of grindhouse slasher films who have watched almost all grindhouse slasher films and recognise the characters. The film strip is part of Fangoria’s brand identity because in almost all of their magazine covers the film strip is evident. I have followed this convention because I’ve done a fangoria front cover I followed the conventions, I also took an image which looked gory and this is also important because fangoria normally has gory images for its front covers. Even though there isn’t much content on the page the layout of the content makes it seem as if there is a lot of information on the page. The main image is important because of the way the character is looking at you this makes the viewer feel like he may be trying to persuade them to buy the magazine because of the smile but because of the way he is looking slightly down it makes the viewer remember that he is a bad character and that he is the killer.
This magazine ‘Sight & Sound’ is for an older sort of demographic we can tell this from the use of the colours and the use of a lot of white.
This magazines main convention is that the masthead is always in that block of yellow which makes it instantly recognisable. The main image is normally staring someone very famous who the demographic of the magazine are familiar with. The film is portrayed as a mature crime film we can tell this because the way in which the title of the article is written in and the fonts throughout the whole page itself.
The page does not have mush content but because the image is taking the centre stage and is taking up the whole page and the use of the big fonts makes it look as if the content is popping out and you can almost touch the image.
The dollar sign at the end of the name of the film shows that it is gangster crime film about money and the writing above that is almost script like it shows that it is a film set in the past about crime and money.
This magazine is ‘Little White Lies’ its mainly always plain and it doesn’t consist of much information, it portrays itself as being an intelligent film magazine because of the way the layout is and that it suggests that its demographic will recognise it even if it doesn’t have much information on the cover. It makes others want to buy it just so that they can see what’s inside, the big white label with the masthead is its brand identity and is what makes this magazine recognisable to its demographic. The use of the red white and black in this magazine is also the brand identity it shows that this magazine does not have to be full of content or have loads of different images on the front in order to draw its audience in. It is almost secretive because it doesn’t revel much so it is intended to make the reader feel special in a way.
